Saginaw Power Steering

At Custom Cruisers FJ40 we use the Saginaw Power Steering
gear box and the Saginaw Power Steering Pump. We have had
great results with Saginaw. Both on and off-road they have
proven to be very reliable and easy to maintain with plenty of
power.

Variable Type Gear Box
At Custom Cruisers FJ40, we have two different types of rebuilt
gear box's. Our first gear box is a Variable type. This box is a
great street and off-road box. The advantage to this box is that
it has a variable ratio which is 13-16 to 1. As you start in to a
turn, the wheels turn slow. The further in to the turn you get, the
faster the steering gets. On the road this is a great advantage
because as you drive straight down the road, if you move the
steering wheel a little bit, it won't tend to shoot you across the
lanes. Off-road it also has an advantage in that you can turn the
wheels fast in to a switch back. Gear box specs Input shaft 3/4
30 spline and 3.1/3 turns lock to lock. And three bolt mounting,
and O-ring line fittings. input shafts sizes can be changed at a
small additional cost.
Large Piston High-Output
Our second gear box is recommended for rock crawlers runing
33" and taller tires. It has 3/4 30 spline input shaft and 4.25
turn's lock to lock. What makes this box heavy duty is the fact
that it has four bolt mounting and a larger steering piston. It
also puts out more turning force than our progressive box.
Some companies call this the hummer box.
Power Steering Pumps
Our pumps are rebuilt to specs as a match for our gear
box's. This pump uses a press on pulley. Pulley and
brackets sold separately.

Steering Component's
Our Connecting Rod and Tie Rods are made from either 1"ODx
.625
ID or 1.25OD X .625ID High Carbon Steel. They are machined to
accept the 21mm Tie Rod ends from a 1984 Toyota Truck. The
Toyota Truck Tie rod ends fit our High Steer arms. We can also
machine other thread sizes such as [ 17mm ] [ 5/8 ] & [ 11/16 ] right
and left hand threads. We can also make custom length Connecting
Rod and Tie Rods.
High Steer Arm's
Our High Steer Arms are flame cut from 3/4 cold roll flat
stock,
then they are bent into shape using a 100 ton press. After
pressing, they are machined to fit the bolt pattern of either the
toy disc break front end or the LC disc front end. Tie rod tapers
are also machined in, to accept the Toyota truck tie rod ends.
This end is a much stronger end than the stock LC ends. Next,
the center king pin is pressed in. The king pin is pressed in and
tig welded in to place. All of this makes for a very nice looking
and strong arm at a reasonable price. We have been building our
arms for about 15 years and have not had a single bent arm.

Pitman Arm
Our Pitman Arm's are laser cut out of 3/4 cold roll plate. On one end
they have a machined taper to accept a Land Cruiser 21mm Tie
Rod end. The splines are pressed Into the arm. The distance
between the tapered end and the splined center is 7." This is a
very nice looking and strong pitman arm.

Column to Box Connecting Shaft
Our shafts start out as a stock GM part. We split the universal
shaft
in half, then we machine a Double-D cut into a 3/4 cold roll shaft. This
will accept the stock GM universal on each end of the shaft. This
gives us a 4" steering shaft slip and a molded and crimped rubber
vibration dampner. This is a very nice and clean setup. It has
Factory connections on Gear Box End and GM Steering Column End
when used with the GM Double D-Shaft Column.
